Earth Day Projects To Make Kids More Aware

There are plenty of fun things you can do with your kids to teach them about Earth Day and make them more aware of the event in general. While many people can be doing more for the environment and are by no means perfect citizens, there is still plenty to be accomplished by achieving awareness as this will lead to reduced energy and resource consumption amongst future generations. A great way to inspire future generations to care about climate change and the environment is through activities which can be done in conjunction with Earth Day, such as Earth Hour or various recycling programs. 1. Participate in Earth Hour Earth Hour is celebrated between 8 and 9 p.m. on the evening of Earth Day each year. This event makes a real statement in large cities as all of the lights go out and the skyline looks very different. By observing earth hour with your children, you can explain to them about how energy production works, what happens when we turn the lights on and off and why it is important to conserve our natural resources and not waste them. This is also useful for kids because they will see the example from the community and appreciate that a lot of other kids just like them are participating in the same event at the same time, which builds unity and affect towards the cause. 2. Volunteer at a recycling program Many public schools and community centers organize recycling programs in their local communities or religious groups. Doing this with a child is a great way to teach them about public service and the environment at the same time. Every child should learn about the importance of their civic duty and how important it is to appreciate what you have been given and use your resources to assist members of the community who require the help more than you might. 3. Buy energy efficient products Many big box and specialty retailers are offering green products such as energy efficient light bulbs. Take your children shopping and teach them how to vote with their wallets by purchasing green friendly items. It is clear that there is plenty that can be done in support of Earth Day. However one chooses to celebrate is a matter of choice and will depend on how serious you believe this holiday should be taken. Nonetheless, it presents a meaningful learning opportunity to learn about the importance of the environment and climate change. Most importantly, events on earth day help children understand what their parents, teachers or mentors think about climate change. Finally, the older generation can set an example for the younger generation through events like this and teach them the importance of environmental compassion.
